Copper Canyon of Mexico |
Fly to Tucson, AZ October 5 and I will pick you up at the airport and bring you to Green Valley, AZ where you will spend the night and the next a.m. fly by small plane from Nogales, AZ to El Fuerte, Mexico where you will work Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday in one of three clinics that Liga International runs in the area.
Sunday morning we will take the train from El Fuerte up into the Copper Canyon (about a four and a half hour ride) where we will detrain at the small town of Bahuichivo. We will be met by one of the local lodge owners and delivered to his lodge, usually, but not always, the San Isidro Lodge. San Isidro usually charges $120 single and $170 double but charges us $25 per night per person and that includes meals.
Monday morning we will go to a village and work, eat and sleep in the school for five days seeing students for fillings, extractions and sealants and adults for extractions before going back to the San Isidro Lodge on Friday and leaving by train for El Fuerte Saturday afternoon bout 1:30. Sunday a.m. we will fly back to Tucson and Monday you will fly back to your point of origin. We usually get back to Nogales, AZ by 1:00 p.m. and at that point we are about one hour fifteen minutes from the Tucson airport so if you want to take a chance you can schedule your flight out of Tucson as late as possible on Sunday. WARNING: Very occasionally the small plane flights are delayed by weather in which case you might miss your Sunday flight so I recommend you fly out on Monday. The cost of the 12 day trip should be between $1,200 and $1,300 depending on where you fly out of originally.
The drill (schedule) is pretty much the same for all the Copper Canyon dental missions. See dates below
Feel free to call or email me at: kalinoff@comcast.net or 651 428 7906 if you have questions.

The 52 mile Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon is held
the first Sunday of March and if you so choose you are welcome to run in
it. You must make some kind of a donation that will go for prize money
for the Indian runners. I've run in it (but not finished) for the last
two years. Fun.

Mexico's Copper Canyon
|
There is a possibility that there will be a mission to the CC in late May or early June. There is an annual convention of about 1500 Tarahumara leaders that takes place in the village of Cuiteco and in 2012 we may have a full medical and dental clinic there. Stay tuned
There will be races at the May/June meeting also but I am at this point not familiar with the details.
Read the book "Born to Run" to learn more about the CC and the races. Excellent book.

REGARDING THE TRIPS
We have always managed to have a translator or two.
We will not always have an assistant so if you know an assistant or hygienist who might be interested, please encourage them to sign up.
If you have favorite instruments, please color code them (I use red, so please use a different color) and bring them along.
There are no xray facilities in the Copper Canyon. | |
